BEHIND THE SCENES: Scouting begins for film locations

(BEHIND THE SCENES is an ongoing series offering an inside look at the making of the independent film “Ten Days in a Madhouse.”)
Legend holds that some people got into the movie business after being “discovered” at Schwab’s Pharmacy in Hollywood.
Jessica Burgoyne broke into the movie business by actually working in the movie business. Sort of.
Last year at this time, she was 26-year-old graduate of Western Washington University with a degree in psychology and no real idea of what she wanted to do next.
She knew she loved movies, so while she contemplated her options, she worked at the Kelso Theater near her hometown of Longview, Wash.
Then the Martians landed.
Indie movie director Tim Hines of Pendragon Pictures was looking for smaller venues to show his film “War of the Worlds: The True Story” on Oct. 30, the eve of the 74th anniversary of Orson Wells scaring America with his radio adaptation of H.G. Welles’ 1898 novel.
Burgoyne and Hines got to talking. Before she knew, she was Hines’ production assistant.
“I was just nerding out with him over the phone,” Burgoyne told Film Files. “I guess he really liked my energy.”

EXCLUSIVE: Newcomer Caroline Barry lands lead movie role as Nellie Bly

EXCLUSIVE: Newcomer Caroline Barry lands lead movie role as Nellie Bly

Nellie Bly was stripped naked and doused with ice-cold water. There must be easier ways for a girl to make a name for herself in the big city.
Caroline Barry has found one. You can play Nellie Bly without actually having to endure ten days in a madhouse.
Bly was 23 years old when she established her reputation as a journalist with her 1887 expose of New York City’s insane asylum on Blackwell’s Island. Barry will be the same age by the time she appears on movie screens as Bly in the movie “10 Days in a Madhouse,” based on the writer’s newspaper articles and subsequent book.

EXCLUSIVE: Movie celebrates 19th-century journalist Nellie Bly

EXCLUSIVE: Movie celebrates 19th-century journalist Nellie Bly

Before Nellie Bly raced around the world in 1889, she changed the world.
It was a better world than the one she found when she became a journalist nine years earlier. It was a world where a woman could  be a journalist, a world where people began to care more about children, factory workers, and the mentally ill.
We live in the world Nellie Bly created — and we don’t even know it.
All most people remember about Nellie Bly, if they remember her at all, is the plucky “girl reporter” who beat Jules Verne’s fictional record by traveling around the world in less than 80 days.
Filmmakers Susan Goforth and Tim Hines say that is more than unfortunate. It is an injustice, one they intend to correct.
Their film, “Ten Days in a Madhouse,” will follow Bly’s first major expose as she goes undercover in New York City’s notorious insane asylum on Blackwell’s Island in 1887… and almost never comes out.

You Won Cannes Review of WAR OF THE WORLDS THE TRUE STORY

"Ever since the 1953 movie adaptation of War Of The Worlds there have been numerous other translations of Wells’ novel, even a 1988 short lived TV series, but of all the ones I have seen the only two—yes, only two—I find worthy of repeated viewings is the ’53 film and this new 2013 docudrama." - Shawn Francis, YOU WON CANNES

The memoir of the last living survivor of the Earth/Mars War of 1900 during the apocalypse at the hands of terrifying alien invaders.

What if the Earth/Mars battle from H.G. Wells' classic novel The War of the Worlds wasn't fiction but actually fact? That's the story of WAR OF THE WORLDS THE TRUE STORY, one of 208 contenders for the 85th Academy Award Oscars, including consideration for best adapted screenplay, best editing and best original score. Like the famous 1938 Orson Welles radio broadcast that caused Americans to believe an actual invasion was in progress, the movie assumes an Earth/Mars War actually occurred in the year 1900 and is presented as the eyewitness memoir of journalist Bertie Wells, the last living survivor as he struggles to find his wife amidst the destruction of humankind at the hands of terrifying alien invaders.
Critic Gary Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times said, "’War of the Worlds The True Story is clever like Wells. Hugely inventive and ambitious, a mock sci-fi docudrama packed with a truly impressive — and clever — mix of editing (a reported 3 1/2 years' worth), special effects, visual artistry and offbeat storytelling."

Frank Scheck, critic of The Hollywood Reporter called the movie, "Impressive for its technical achievements...Director/Editor Hines weaves the various styles of footage together in expert fashion."

Steven Rose Jr. of the Sacramento Examiner gave the movie 5 out of 5 stars and said, “’The True Story’ carries the suspense and drama of both the 1953 movie and Spielberg’s 2005 version but in a more realistic manner through its documentary style.

“The aliens are unsettling, with bright, evil eyes and writhing tentacles. The designs of the tripods and the aliens are much truer to the book than other versions," said reviewer Tristan Hiegler of the PT Leader

The movie uniquely uses Cutting Edge Visual Effects to blend a modern cast with Battalions of Actual Fighting Soldiers, Golden Age Movie Stars, and previously undisclosed images of Tentacled Alien Creatures and their 10-Story High, 3-Legged Fighting Machines.

10 DAYS IN A MADHOUSE - FEATURE SUSPENSE THRILLER IN PRE-PRODUCTION

10 DAYS IN A MADHOUSE - IN PRE-PRODUCTION. She was born during the civil war. In a man's world she was called the greatest reporter in America. At 23, Nellie Bly feigned mental illness to go undercover in a notorious woman's insane asylum. As a result of Nellie Bly's efforts a huge spotlight was thrown on the corruptions taking advantage of society’s most vulnerable.

Letter of Thanks from Prof Allen Levy - Chapman University for WAR OF THE WORLDS THE TRUE STORY Screening

April 9, 2013

Dear Timothy:

On behalf of all of us at Chapman University, I want to thank you for your wonderful presentation and the screening of "The War of the Worlds: The True Story." It is not every day that my students get a chance to hear from a working professional, especially one who was as eloquent and persuasive as you were. As you know, I took the occasion to teach my Communication Studies students about how media constructs our view of reality and, by extension, our view of history. Your film was the perfect vehicle for illustrating this idea. It is an astonishing work technically, but, as many of my students pointed out, it also contains an underlying humanism, as we see the humans, in all their frailty, running from the Martians. I wish you well with the film as you near the release date, and I hope you will return to Chapman with many other movies. We had fun, our students learned something, and we saw a great movie. All in all, a fabulous experience. Many thanks.
